Denver Postpartum Doula

What is a postpartum doula?

If the concept of postpartum doula is foreign to you, then you are not alone. It is only recently that people have begun to talk about postpartum doulas and the incredible work that we do!

As a postpartum doula, I am trained in assisting families during the postpartum period (sometimes referred to as the 4th trimester), or the three months after birth. My job is to help integrate your new child into the family and help you find balance with the additional member. The support I provide is not only to the person who gave birth, but to partners, big brothers and sisters, and other family members that are around the home.

The time during the postpartum period can come with many new and unexpected challenges and having someone around with the training to provide guidance and support can be especially helpful!

What are postpartum doula services?

According to DONA International, the work of a postpartum doula can be broken down to three different categories: practical, informational, and emotional.

The practical work of a postpartum doula includes helping the family meal prep, doing some light house cleaning, and spending time with big brothers and sisters so that the baby and parents can get some well deserved rest.

As a postpartum doula, I am extremely knowledgeable about newborn and infant care. I can provide information on diaper changes, breastfeeding, and other needs you and your baby may have.  I also provide overnight care so you can sleep.

One of my favorite experiences being a postpartum doula is the emotional support I provide. I love giving new parents an opportunity to tell their birth story, or just sitting with them when they feel overwhelmed and need a supporting shoulder.

What is my goal as a postpartum doula?

My goal as a postpartum doula is to work myself out of a job. I hope that by the time your new little one turns three months old that I have imparted you with all of the knowledge and skills you need to be confident in your new job as a parent. That is not to say that you will know everything, but you will have a solid base to continue building your skillset as a parent, as your child grows from an infant, to a toddler, to a teenager, and beyond.
